Library Filing Systems
When somebody mentions “library filing system” they usually refer to the Dewey Decimal System. There are also
other forms of library filing system, some employ alpha numeric filing system for books while some use technology,
a library software organizer.
The Dewey Decimal System is a proprietary system of library classification. It tries to organize books into ten
different classes. Each class has varied subcategories with 10 subdivisions each. One can decipher what books are
classified in the Dewey Decimal System through the following: (a) computer science, information and general
works, (b) philosophy and psychology, (c) religion, (d) social sciences, (e) language, (f)
science, (g) technology/applied sciences, (h) arts and recreation, (i) literature, (j) history, geography and
biography.
Another form of library filing system that is used to organize records, books and reference materials with a
systematic method of retrieval and access of records is called the alphanumerical filing system. This filing system
is a combination of alphabetical filing and numerical filing.
The library software is also an important tool in library filing system. It organizes the library to the point that
it is accessible to children who yearns to learn. Library software will help the library filing system as it
catalogs the current books the library has. It can also list down what are the latest readings assigned by the
professor and it can determine if the library has ample stock of that particular literature. The Library
Organizer can also pinpoint what amongst the current books are missing or have been in the overdue list and they
can ask for it back or replace them all together. The library organizer can also update the current books that the
school requires and forward them to the school’s donor’s list.
It is actually a device that tracks the books for the school and interested students.
Not only the school or the students, but everyone in particular benefits from this software. Donors know what type
of books the library needs, students know what type of books are available and schools can know what books they
need to purchase. Though technology and computer can enhance a library filing system, it still boils down to people
having the interest to read books.
